Letting go

Another suitcase load of books to the charity shop today. I am surprised at how easily I have been able to let go of my books. They were the one thing I have hoarded over the years. It shows how my outlook has changed.
It reminds me of giving up smoking. If you can get to the point where you really want to do it and you know that it is the right thing for you to do, it becomes easy.
Once an idea takes root, it grows and then the result feels like a natural progression. Whether it’s giving up smoking, changing career, or giving up the career altogether, this is the pattern that I have experienced so far.

Find out how to leave the rat race and get the life you want. Read my story and others, learn from our mistakes and be inspired by our successes!
Love the idea, but the doing? Can’t get there. Music and books mark the map of my life so far so I can’t just up and dump them. Credit to you for simplifying. Oh and sorry about commenting on an old post but I tried out your tag thingy and it works pretty well. I like your blog well enough to have linked it on mine.

Hey David, your blog is fascinating and those waves look beautiful. It’s heavy and messy here today with a massive swell coming in on Monday but winds onshore.
I think these days when you can fit an entire library of books and music (or both) on something the size of a lighter, it is easier to simplify!
Also, there’s something about letting things pass through your life rather than making them stop with you. I think books can be like this. Acquire them, read them and then pass them on. It would be great if we could have more things circulating in society, in a swop-shop sort of style. It happens in some communities, not so much here in the UK.
