It has come to my attention that readers may assume that I have come to dislike London or that it is making me unhappy living here. But this is not the case at all! I love London, it is just that I don’t feel the city is the best place for me to do what I want to do at this stage of my life.
Any unhappiness or frustration I feel is internal and not directly caused by the environment, although I suspect that a change of environment will help me to sort things out internally. A change is as good as a rest, as they say.
In fact, it worries me, leaving a city like London that is so diverse and accepting of people’s differences. I am nervous about encountering racism or homophobia, although this is partly a generational issue as well as a geographical one. One reason for choosing to live in Newquay is that — during the season at least — there is a bit more diversity than there might be in other parts of the county, and a more relaxed attitude towards different lifestyles.
