Buying my first wetsuit

Read my guide to buying your first wetsuit here.
I bought my first wetsuit a few days ago. At first I was a bit daunted by the variety of types and prices but after trying a few on and getting some detailed advice from the guys in the shops, I got an idea of what I wanted and what I was prepared to pay for. So I am now the proud owner of a top end C-Skins ladies Angel steamer, which I picked up a bit cheaper because it is last year’s model. The photo is this year’s model but it’s very similar; mine has lilac side panels instead of salmon pink. This year they’ve demoted the lilac colour to their cheapest suit, but I actually prefer it. Why do sports manufacturers always do their ladies stuff in pink?! I’ve had this discussion with female friends and we all think it’s a bit annoying. I quite like pink but I don’t want to have my entire technical wardrobe in it.
Anyway, I tried the suit in anger today for the first time and it seems fine. I went down to my nearest surfing beach, Lusty Glaze, and hired an 8-foot foam ladies board (and yes, it was pink!) for the afternoon. I also had a word with the hire guy, Will, about a deal on hiring boards, as £10 a day is quickly going to work out very expensive. We agreed a decent deal for now, and we might work out something even better when the peak season is over.
I must admit, I was a tad nervous about getting back in the water. I have never been surfing on my own before and I didn’t have a friend to go along with this time. Things are so much easier when you do them with a mate, or even someone you don’t know very well but who is part of the same group. However, the rational part of my brain won over with the sensible argument that a) you’ve been before and really enjoyed it and b) practically everyone else in the water is a beginner too. And both of these turned out to be true. As soon as I entered the water with my board I felt much better. The anticipation is always worse than the doing.
