Running routes

I have been unable to bring you news of exciting outdoor pursuits like rock climbing or surfing because the weather has not favoured these activities of late, being mainly rainy and flat. Most of England seems to be under water right now. We have not had flooding here, although we have had our share of rain. Our local boys from RAF St Mawgan - which I can see from my living room window - have been deploying their Sea King helicopter to help the people of Gloucestershire, so this is not a good time to get lost at sea either.

Running route along the cliffs to Watergate bayI went out with the Newquay Road Runners (meep meep) on Wednesday evening, for the first time since I moved here. The last time I ran with them was when I was here on a flat-hunting trip. I hadn’t been doing much running at that time and barely survived the 7-mile hilly odyssey they took me on! This time, I took it slower and acquitted myself rather better. My running has started to improve again as I have been doing my cliff-top route to Watergate Bay. I took this picture the other day trying to capture the vibrancy of the bands of green, blue and yellow that dominate the landscape. This weekend I branched out and developed a new inland route that made use of local footpaths and minor roads. There is some lovely countryside inland from here, charming villages, streams, woodland and curious livestock.

I prefer running off-road and try to use trails wherever possible. As I was trotting up a footpath in the middle of nowhere, I came across a very large family home complete with tennis court and summer house. But why would anyone want to live out here? I wondered as I jogged up the hill. However, as I rounded the corner of the property I saw why: the magnificent vista all the way down the valley to Porth beach. I’ll have to take the camera next time I do that route.
