Taking it easy

I have taken to wandering down to the beach of an evening. There is something very pleasant about feeling the sand between your toes and the water lapping around your legs. There’s always something to look at, whatever the weather, and the sea and sky are never the same two days running. Porth faces directly west so sunset is a particularly beautiful time. This evening, Nature decided to put on a bit of a show, as this picture demonstrates. How gorgeous is that!
I’ve been having a pretty lazy, easy-going time of it recently. I have made a few friends at the local climbing wall, although none of them actually live in Newquay! I am also shopping around for a new wetsuit and trying out a new gym tomorrow. I’m not entirely sure that I can afford gym membership but it could be a good way of meeting local people so I haven’t ruled it out yet. But my ‘moment of the week’ has been getting my broadband sorted out. I am addicted to the internet, so not to have it at home for a couple of weeks made me unsettled and jittery. It’s a bit sad to admit it but I did feel my life was on hold until I got online.
Today was warm and sunny, but generally it has been quite wet and windy here and this is hitting the tourist industry, with people cancelling holidays at the last minute. But us residents have had a few extra weeks of relative peace and quiet so I’m not complaining! The town is full of groups of school leavers on holiday after finishing their exams. I’ve got to that age where I look at them and think, ‘Ah, isn’t it nice to see the young people having fun!’. There are some stunning-looking girls around but nothing particularly special in the male department. Maybe they are a bit young at the moment. Men don’t start to look hot until they are in their early twenties.
I feel a bit sorry for the kids with all the bad weather, but they seem to be having a good time nevertheless. As I was wandering on the beach the other evening, four teenage lads ran down to the water’s edge, flung their shorts on the rocks and bounded naked into the sea, knackers cupped in their hands. I was paddling at the time and knew how chilly the water was! Another bunch of teenagers were sitting on the rocks on the other side of the beach and one cheeky young miss ran over, grabbed their shorts and raced back to the rocks while the boys jumped waves, oblivious. It was all very amusing and when the lads emerged from the sea to find their shorts gone they took it in good spirit.
Newquay is gradually building up to peak season now. The circus arrived a week ago and the fair opened this weekend. Half the shops I went into today had sold out of wetsuits. There’ll be a lot more to come over the next few weeks!
